Elevated Drum D-Style Boilers are Mostly Shop Assembled, Require Minimal Field Labor

Cleaver-Brooks, sole manufacturer of custom, integrated boiler/burner solutions in the industry, has engineered the Elevated Drum D-Type boiler, designed to maximize the amount of shop assembly, while minimizing costly field labor often associated with high-capacity boilers. The Elevated Drum D-Style boiler is available in either custom or modular design.

“The Elevated Drum D-Style Boiler enables us to deliver integrated, custom boiler solutions to our customers more quickly and cost effectively, compared to traditional field-erected ones,” said Robert St. Denis, president of Engineered Boiler Systems for Cleaver-Brooks.  “We have the experience and engineering expertise to deliver fully customized steam solutions to meet the customer’s specific needs.”

The Custom Elevated Drum D-Style is designed for large steam capacities (up to 500,000 lb/hr) and high pressures (1,000+ psig).  It features a generous furnace that results in low volumetric heat release rates. The steam-generating module is completely shop assembled, hydro tested, insulated, lagged and shipped as a packaged unit.  The steam drum is assembled with the trim, hydro tested, insulated, lagged and shipped as the second unit.  The only field work required is: setting the steam drum on saddles; pipe welding the prefabricated downcomers and risers; and mounting the burner using pre-installed mounting plates.

To date, Cleaver-Brooks has engineered nine Custom Elevated Drum D-Style boilers for a total steam capacity of more than 4 million lb/hr.

Cleaver-Brooks also offers a Modular Elevated Drum D-Style for steam capacities up to 700,000 lb/hr at high pressure and/or temperature.  The design is similar to the Elevated Drum D-Style in that it is shop assembled to the maximum extent possible with the furnace and steam generating bank shipped as separate modules.

Both elevated drum designs include a large furnace with heat release rates less than 80,000 btu/hr/ft3; a very low pressure drop convection bank; and external (unheated) downcomers and risers to ensure superior natural circulation and extended operating life. The elevated steam drum is adequately sized to handle load fluctuations with oversized drums (up to 72” ID x 45 ft long) and properly sized drum internals.

In addition, both designs include: a finned tube economizer and a system of air heaters utilizing heat transfer fluid to shift waste heat from the flue gas to the combustion air to optimize heat recovery with 2 to 3% higher thermal efficiencies than conventional products.  They also include: a dual burner, state-of-the-art, low NOx combustion system, including fuel train, BMS and CCS to maximize system reliability and efficiency.
